With 2013 now here, which games (either that are out now or coming soon) that you don’t play are you looking to get more into?
For me that’s The Old Republic, I loved KOTOR and have always wanted to give an MMO a try. Also League of Legends, I’ve played Dota 2 (not that well…) for over a year but I’m curious about LoL too. I’ve played 30 or so games but I’m having a hard time learning the items and abilities, it doesn’t feel that intuitive compared to Dota’s stuff — probably a failing on my part.
—Elmo (presumably not the red puppet)’s comment from My 2012 “I Like You” Awards
I’m so glad you asked this! I haven’t thought about what I’m going to play next year at all yet, and if 2012 taught me anything it’s that good games will get lost if I don’t actively keep track of them.
First of all, you choices are excellent
LoL and SWTOR are both great games that you can (mostly) enjoy without paying a dime. So that’ll help the wallet too! If you ever have questions about LoL, feel free to shoot them my way. I’ve played it a lot, and am always happy to team up in-game for a match (just add “Nereus”).
If we’re going strictly with games that will be out by early 2013 that I have not played at all, I’d really like to get into Neverwinter’s beta and revel in Mass Effect 3′s story. Neverwinter looked very promising in the one hands-off demo I got of it at PCG, and I really like the overall “feel” of the universe and animations. Mass Effect 1 and 2 has one of my favorite gaming storylines of all time going, and I was reluctant to jump into 3 until I I thought I’d have several days straight to just take in the whole thing at once. It’s pretty clear that’s not going to happen with my schedule at the moment, so I just need to jump in.
Dota 2 is my big personal challenge for 2013, though. I haven’t put nearly as much time into it as I should have, and there’s so many cool heroes I keep hearing about that I want to learn. Let’s make it official: my goal is to play every hero in Dota 2 at least once, and to have mastered at least 3, by the time 2013 comes to a close.
I also want to put much more time into Guild Wars 2, The Walking Dead, SWTOR, and Diablo 3. I want to finish the stories in all of them. I don’t need to hit max level in Diablo 3, but I do feel compelled to beat Normal mode on my hardcore Monk at the very least. I’ll finish The Walking Dead with my wife, and hope to be brought to tears at least 2 times during it. Guild Wars 2 never really got stuck in my mind when I played it, but it came out when I was transitioning to the new job and I think it deserves a second chance. All I want from SWTOR is to finish the storyline on my Sniper—it was going really well, but the game just wasn’t worth a subscription. If they try and kidnap my action bars even though I bought the game originally, though, I’ll skip it. That’s just the dirtiest way to nickel-and-dime F2P customers.
So I think that’s all of my list! What’s on the rest of yours? If you need help remembering games that will be coming out in 2013, PC Gamer put together a very extensive list recently.

I’ve got to get through my steam list of games I’ve yet to play and games I should beat. Working on Saints Row 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3 now. I’ve got so much I want to do in WoW it often feels overwhelming, so I’d like to get through some of that content once so it doesnt feel like I’ve got an endless amount of stuff to do every login.
After that I want to get through some classics if at all possible. KOTOR and 2, Freelancer 2, etc. I’ve played some games in a pirated form but I’d like to really give them a good shot now that I own them and modded them to my new standards.
My personal gaming resolution is to try and get over my shallow aesthetic requirements for games. I dont like indie games or most 8 bit style games aesthetically and it shouldn’t be an issue because I grew up on Mario and Zelda for the NES and SNES.
2013 is going to be a challenging year..
I keep an actual list of games I want to complete so I don’t overlook anything, it seems like every day I’m adding something to it… http://alexg.me/~/games.txt
2013 will be the year I hopefully start to take some games off it!
As for you Dota 2 challenge Josh, going through one at a time like you’re planning is an awesome way to learn the game. Especially if you jump around between the roles rather that doing all the supports then all the carries and so on. I did something pretty similar when I started off, I’ve still got a few of the more technical heroes left myself.
I went through with a partner, we’d play heroes that meshed well together. If I was trying out Faceless Void (a melee hard carry) the other person would pick a ranged support like Crystal Maiden or a utility hero like Lion so we’d have a nice lane going.
You already have me on Steam (my profile is also linked above) so give me a shout whenever you want to start playing and I’ll happily step in and give pointers, explain mechanics and item choices, play practice games or full-on PvP games if you want that!
@Hawkinson That cursed Steam sale will keep our game backlogs filled for months to come, easily
I totally know that feeling in WoW, though. I recently switched to a new character and I feel way behind on the endgame grind now too! I want to hit 90 and play through the story stuff in Karasang Wilds before 5.2 but I don’t think it’s going to happen.
That’s a great gaming goal
I hope you can learn to embrace the low-fi graphics, but I wouldn’t worry too much if you can’t. Our tastes change over time and sometimes the best things in the past, belong there.
@Alex Keeping an actual list of games you want to complete is absolutely brilliant, Alex. I try to cobble together something using groups in Steam, but your way is straightforward and easy to reference. I like it!
I will definiteyl take you up on the offer for help with Dota 2. You just have to promise to not call me a noob every time I die
@Josh I used to use Steam categories for a similar system but on more than one occasion Steam ‘forgot’ which games went where, a basic text file proved much more reliable!
You don’t have to worry about the noob thing, I still consider myself one too!
Whenever you’re ready (the game isn’t going anywhere, although the hero pool is slowly growing…) we’ll get the ball rolling. The game seems beyond intimidating at first but once a few key aspects click, mainly the Strength / Agility / Intelligence attribute system and the jungle and creep mechanics, everything else falls into place rather quickly.
I’ll definitely play some more Crusader Kings 2, as that is getting more and more DLC, and has so many options it’d take forever to do them all. It sounds like I need to try Dota 2 out too, and I’ll probably look around for some new RTSs.
